British Blue Shorthair
The British shorthair remains as one of the most bred cats in the world and is a popular choice among cat owners, new and advanced carers alike. Consistency is seen across the gene pool but a great colour and pattern variation has been maintained. This means that prospective owners will be spoilt for choice when looking for the catalogue of British Shorthair cats. Some of the more characteristic parts of the cat will relate to its rounded head and small ears while others will vary based on eye colour or certain care requirements. The British Blue Shorthair is one of the most popular cat choices in the world today due to its long established lineage.
The colour of the British blue is perceived to be elegant and most appealing to cat owners. They were first cat fancy breed in the world and they are very famous in the cat caring realm. In the 1800s, breeding of the shorthair began and a range of colours and traits came into existence. The “father” of this breed is known to be a British Artist named Harrison Weir. The blue is an unusual colour and this cat is recognised for its unique shade of blue and golden eyes that shine brightly from its darker complexion. Blue Shorthairs are known for their muscular stature that portrays them as strong and hardy animals. They carry themselves with pride and enjoy being independent. Owners will enjoy engaging with the Blue Shorthair as it is known as a very passionate companion that enjoys being in the company of its carers.
The Blue shorthair thrived as one of the most popular breeds but this was not always the case. During World War 2, the breed faced near extinction. War had taken its toll on not only the people of the world but the animals also. Shortage in cats meant certain selective measures were required to keep the shorthair breed from being lost entirely. The use of domesticated longhair Persians, other shorthairs and breeds were used to retain the gene pool. This has greatly contributed to the variation across the British Blue Breed.
As with all British shorthairs, the shorter and densely packed fur coat is very manageable for those short on grooming time. Short grooming sessions held on a regular basis will help the British Blue looking pristine throughout its life. It is also entirely capable of grooming itself to an acceptable standard without help.
