Yesterday, May 5, was Cinco de Mayo. It's a holiday many think is Mexican Independence Day. In reality it is the celebration of a military victory by Mexican troops over French Forces in 1862. In recent years, at least in the United States, the holiday has become something like St. Patrick's Day. An opportunity to appropriate a culture and consume the alcoholic beverages that are sold to the public as being associated with those countries. Many Americans who would be urging Trump to "build the wall" gleefully consumed Corona or Dos Equis in sombreros.
As corporate America, especially the beer industry, look for opportunities to move product, might the next commemoration to be appropriated be Juneteenth. This event, celebrated on June 19, commemorates when slavery was abolished in Texas:

Much like St. Patrick's Day is used to move Guinness, etc and Cinco to sell Corona, could Juneteeth be used to move malt liquor? Could "hip-hop karaoke" competitions be staged in suburban bars?
Or could both Cinco and Juneteeth be turned into something like another made up holiday? Could these two days become a sort of "Festivus". This holiday, made famous in an episode of Seinfeld, is to be a day to air grievances. In this post, post-racial America, where Trump has empowered reactionary forces, and Latinx and African-Americans are dealing with mass incarceration , poverty, etc.
Have the days be for education, and action. Perhaps with Cinco, even engaging in disruption.
Getting My Feet Under Me?
Last month, I got a bonus from work. I used it to pay bills and make a few purchases; A tablet and case for example. I also purchased a DIY sandal kit from Xero Shoes.
The assembly of the shoes was pretty straightforward. I did have to use the hole punch tool to make the ankle holes larger so I could thread the laces. Getting the laces tied was also a task, and I don't think I have it %100. The directions recommended I get my feet used to the shoes, and I spent a few hours a day last week doing this.
The main issue I seem to have is with the shoes attach to my ankles. It's a matter of figuring out how tight and where on the ankle the straps go. I think trying to wear the shoes for any sort of longer distance walking is a bit of a ways off.
