DAILY CELESTIAL CHALLENGE - STRUCTURES

in celestialchallenge •  7 years ago

Many Thanks to @sirknight for this wonderful opportunity. So for today’s celestial challenge I will run through some of the wonders of the ancient world. As a child who played Empire Earth, I was fascinated by the wonders used in the game to grant extra ability to the users.

So first, I will start with the Pyramd of Giza

This is probably one of the oldest wonders of the world and it still stands today. As the Egyptians were known for building Pyramids in order to bury their pharaohs or anyone of high esteem. It was built as the final resting place of the Pharaoh Khufu, over 4000 years ago. So clearly it can be seen why it is considered a wonder as very few buildings can last that long .

Then we have Pharos Lighthouse

This is also one of the wonders of the ancient world, as it was built by Alexander the Great at around 400 - 300 B.C. when he reigned although it was not completed during his reign but rather when Ptolemy who took over from Alexander was the ruler. But nonetheless the building was the most magnificent of its time and the tallest building then with the height of about 70 ft.

The Hanging Gardens of Babylon

The Babylonian city was probably one of the greatest cities in the world being located in Mesopotamia, a city between two rivers, the river Euphrates and Tigris. The city was said to have been in existence around 600 B.C. in which it was ruled by the different sets of tribe at different times including the Sumerians, the Assyrians and also the Babylonians

The Statue of Zeus.

Although there is no available relic to prove that this statue ever existed, this is due to the fact that it was destroyed around 400 B.C. when the Greeks where invaded. It was built by the greek architect, Phidias and the only proof of it existence are in writings or depiction from ancient greeks.

The Collosus of Rhodes

This, like some of the other wonders, is not visible today. The statue was built by the people of Rhodes as a means to show appreciation to the Greek sun god, Helios but it was destroyed around 200 B.C. by an earthquake. Although, they were offered help by Ptolemy the III, who then was the pharaoh of Egypt, they declined believing that the sun god, helios took the statue down himself because it did not appease him.

On the next celestial challenge on structures, I will try to talk on the modern wonders of the world
