An engineer from the United States (US), Martin Cooper, 93 years old, the inventor of the cellular phone (cellphone), recently suggested that anyone should not spend too much time playing with gadgets, including cell phones.
On the BBC Breakfast show, Cooper suggested that people stop scrolling and enjoy life more.
Cooper led the team at Motorola responsible for the development of the first cell phone in the 1970s. He became the first person in history to make a mobile phone call in public in 1973.
Now Cooper is known as the 'Father of the Cell Phone. Although he is known as the inventor of the cellphone, he admits that he doesn't use cell phones very often. He spends less than five percent of his time playing on his cell phone.
Cooper can't believe anyone spends more than five hours on their cell phone. “You spend five hours a day? Stop and enjoy life," Cooper said as quoted from Metro, Monday, July 4, 2022.
So how much time have humans spent with cell phones?
Cell phones are an essential device for modern life. Not only for communicating, but cell phones are also useful as a means of entertainment, such as browsing Twitter or scrolling videos on TikTok and YouTube. However, maybe anyone will be surprised, during life, humans can spend almost a decade on cell phones.
A study by WhistleOut surveyed 1,000 US cell phone or smartphone users to see how much time they spent on their phones and the results were surprising. The survey found that millennials born in 1981-1996 spend almost a quarter of their real-life on their mobile phones. This equates to 23.1 percent of those people's days.
However, this figure fell for Generation X who was born in 1965-1980 as much as 16.5 percent. The Baby Boomers group was born in 1946-1964 with 9.9 percent.
In addition, the researchers also calculated the average number of hours a day spent on the phone. Studies reveal results that vary widely between generations. The average screen time per day for the millennial group was 3.7 hours, Gen X spent an average of 3 hours, and Boomers were the lowest at 2.5 hours.
By crunching the numbers, WhistleOut was able to estimate that the average phone user throughout their lives would spend 8.74 years with their cell phone. However, especially for the millennial generation, the number of phone users is high because of the technology-focused work they do.
