The threat of the FILTERNET - Will it fuel the decentralisation movement?

in censorship •  6 years ago

This was the first clip from the Honest Government Ad YouTube channel I ever saw. It's a pity not more people noticed this one - or other ones - to stop the Internet Censorship Bill (Article 13) and sign the petition to stop it.

Because now it's going to happen.

The internet as we know it, will go away.

This is one of those things that will achieve the complete opposite of what it's supposed to. I don't know whether the politicians who make these laws are so far removed from reality that they don't see that, or whether they think we are all stupid and believe their sweet legalese talk.

Either way - this new law will NOT put more pressure and fines on the large centralized media platforms like Facebook and Google, but it will make them even more powerful.

Watch the entertaining clip above to understand why.

On the bright side...

What this will also do, is give even more fuel to the desire for decentralisation, and more motivation for developers to create decentralised, censorship-free media platforms.

Many are already in development - Steemit.com and Minds.com are two of the better known ones, but there are many more on the horizon, who knows how many will be around in two years. I do hope there will be one or more that truly provide a proper alternative to Facebook and other corporations.

Of course along with decentralized (social) media platforms, we also need decentralised search engines. This is important, because even well-meaning companies like Duck Duck Go will fall under the new regulations and will have to comply with the Filternet Law, because they are a company, that is owned by someone and located in some jurisdiction.

The only solution is decentralisation.

Because how do you control or shut down something that is neither owned by anyone nor based anywhere?

Sadly, not enough people were bothered enough to stop Article 13.

Our only hope is enough people will get truly disturbed once they experience the effects, and join the decentralised alternatives.
