The indelible tree
I waited a few minutes while I thought clearly what I was going to say to the head of the family. Although the offer was quite good, the price they offered took him by surprise to such an extent that he did not know if they were playing a joke on him or if they were telling him the truth. The only wise thing he could think of to say at the time was to ask how long he could stay on the farm, to which the head of the family replied that he could do so today, if they reached an agreement for a definite time. Frederick ended up accepting, he told him very kindly that he agreed with the price of the room he was offering and that he would love to stay there from that moment on. Initially he stipulated that his stay in that place would not exceed thirty days, so he agreed with the owner to pay for a month. He immediately took out of his leather bag a small bag of fine cloth where he kept his gold coins. He proceeded to pay her coin by coin what he had agreed, both smiling satisfied.
The gentleman got up quickly, the coffee in his cup was not yet finished, and he invited Frederick to take a walk around the farm, for if he was going to live there, even for a month, it was absolutely imperative that Frederick should know the location of the common places on the farm, which in itself was quite extensive. He started by showing him the main house, which was right in front of the entrance, on the north side. There he lived with all his family, his wife and his 4 small children, he mentioned that they regularly received visitors, close relatives of his wife, and that for a long time his brother lived there, but that had already changed, so they had the room available to be rented to a good man and nothing conflictive.
The main house was quite big, it had a lot of rooms, which for reasons of time and privacy, could not be shown in the tour that was being offered to Frederick. In total there were four floors, all of them with quite traditional decoration, it was impressive the amount of objects that could be together in harmony in the same wall, apparently the wife of the owner was a faithful fan of the country decoration mixed with some baroque influences. The structure of the house was solid, it had to be to be able to support those 4 floors, it was widely reinforced with giant trunks that worked as columns in each of the floors, and although the floor creaked in some areas when walking on it, in general there were no signs of evident deterioration in the house. Its owner always boasted about it, remarking on different occasions that this house had been in his family's possession for at least 7 generations and never had any structural problems.
According to the head of the family, this house was built by one of his ancestors, with the help of his sons. This famous ancestor was recognized by the whole village as one of the most passionate and talented builders. He was able to build large mansions in a very short time, if he had enough help, and he excelled at building complex and innovative structures. His ancestor's motto is based on building homes that will last a lifetime; it is said that it took him a little more than 25 years to be able to complete his own house, since he did not have enough resources to buy all the materials at once, nor could he hire the necessary men to help him in his hard work.
He also confessed that the main house was going to be much bigger than it was, but it was totally impossible to realize his ancestor's dream. The construction would take about 10 more years, but Kristof, his ancestor, was never able to cut down one of the trees that stood in the way of his great construction plans. It is said, according to local legends, that Kristof tried until the last day of his life to cut down that gigantic tree that refused to take off the roots of the soil that saw it born more than 400 years ago. Local fanatics speak of the tree as if it were a superior thinking creature, they say that it is over 500 years old, and that it was strongly bewitched by a witch in the 13th century. All these were passing stories and without foundation for the whole family, and he was telling them personally to Frederick to avoid him finding out from some other alternate source.
The truth was much simpler than anything that other people were exposing in their gullibility. Kristof tried several times to cut down the tree, but the wood that had formed after so many decades was phenomenally resistant to the saws of the time, and there was no advanced machinery to throw the tree to the ground. The head of the family also confessed that every time some other method to cut it down was tried, something unexpected happened, a strong electrical storm, incessant rain, unbearable sand winds, among many other unfortunate events that Kristof experienced; although all this was very suspicious, for him it was always the product of a coincidence, although for the rest it was the beginning of a great legend.
