The US ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, today anticipated the possibility of promoting new sanctions against North Korea if it continues with its ballistic tests and insisted on the need to cease its nuclear program.

Speaking to reporters at UN headquarters, Haley echoed reports that give an account of the possibility that the Pyongyang regime intends in the next few days to conduct another test with missiles.

"I hope it does not happen, but if it happens, we will have to apply new measures against the North Korean regime," added Haley, who recalled that last year the Security Council imposed different packages of economic sanctions against North Korea.

The ambassador also referred to the first scores that are emerging between the two Koreas to resume the dialogue that has been interrupted for more than two years.

Haley called the Pyongyang regime "reckless" and said that no negotiations can be taken "seriously if nothing is done to ban nuclear weapons."

The Government of Seoul has proposed to Pyongyang the holding of a high-level meeting on January 9, to facilitate the participation of North Korea in the Olympic Winter Games PyeongChang 2018, to be held between February 9 and 25 .

The regime of Kim Jong-un has yet to accept the proposal, although it is known after the North Korean leader's opening speech to be open to dialogue with the South, so that his country sends a delegation to the Olympic event.
