What is the difference between territories & states a& why do some say there are 50 states while others say there are 52 or more & is DC a state and what is the USA INC. and what about pre-1776 states?

As complicated as it sounds we just have 50 states, DC though the capital isn't apart of any state and isn't its own state, and though American Samoa, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands are territories of the US. Basically meaning they pay taxes but have no real voting power here in the US even though they have representatives they don't get any real power with voting. Kind of messed up if you ask me.
