Land of Confusion

At first, when I started an account in this platform my goal was to use it exclusively to share some doubts and information about the cryptocurrencies world. And although that's exactly what I intend to do from now on, I wanted to share with you some of the mindblowing things that are taking place in my country, Venezuela, just to let me know what you think about it.

I'm pretty sure some of you already heard some news of the economic crisis here, but I'm pretty certain also that some of you are left wandering if some of those news are just crazy people exaggerating about it or even some of you, maybe, believe the government's "truth" about being the victim of an international sponsored "economic war". Just in case you don't know about it, we just ended 2017 with an inflation measured around 2000 or 2500% (and I say around because the government stop publishing this numbers "to deny our enemies the weapons they need to attack us"), food and medicin (including birth control) shortages and a GDP contraction around 30% in the last 4 years.

So yesterday, my country's government approved (and by "government approved" I mean the president yelled it on a nationally televised message) a series of economic measures to help the people fight this so called "economic war". And one of these measures turns out to be very disturbing to me:

Every pregnant woman should receive a 700,000.00 VEF (bolivars, the national currency) monthly bonus, and a 1,000,000.00 VEF bonus at the time of birth (being 797,000.00 VEF per month the minimum wage, around 4 USD according to the black market price but actually more like 30 USD of value in terms of what you can afford to buy with it).

It should be noted that just ONE DAY EARLIER, PDVSA's new CEO (PDVSA is the venezuelan state-owned oil company, which generates around 95% of all national income) said puclicly that the company is going through very difficult times and that "there are days with no income at all" (http://www.el-nacional.com/noticias/gobierno/quevedo-pdvsa-atraviesa-una-crisis-financiera-muy-importante_218732)

Obviously there's not enough (real) money to pay for these and some other "gifts" that the government wants to give to people (this is a presidential election year, none the less), so they'll print it out of thin air causing an even bigger inflation at the end of 2018.

So here's the thing, if you are a young girl with none or close to no income living in a crisis-ridden country, would you rather finish high school and go college (there are free colleges, so one good thing, right?), or start "making some money" right away? Am I being too skeptical about human intelligence for thinking that lots of people are going to get pregnant just so they can take an aditional income? Is this the kind of "help" that's gonna help end with poverty? Is this in any away a good incentive?

What do you think?

I thought you were going in a slightly different direction with the expression "make some money", i.e., prostitution, but the scenario you outline is actually even more disturbing!

All the more so, because I think a non-zero number of young women will feel incentivized to bring a newborn child into the world in great part due to monetary considerations. It happens in wealthier countries every day with the welfare system and food stamps, so why not in Venezuela, too?

I guess it's just the world we live in...
