Senior SETI (Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence) astronomer Seth Shostak, made a bet (this TED talk) that in the next 20 years we will find intelligent extraterrestrial life, or he will buy everyone on this planet, a coffee. That's a 8.8 billion cups jackpot!
His assessment is that in this time frame, most probably we will not have a contact with an ET civilization, but we will be able to capture signals from a big distance.
