I have a fairly intimate relationship with the concept of adoption. A family not living too far from me, around the same time I was born, adopted a 4 month old girl from South Korea.
She would end up being my wife and mother to my daughter and soon to be son. This is by far the most significant relationship in my life. But I have so many other good friends who were also adopted, and I probably wouldn't have them in my life otherwise.
But every time it's brought up, they say it was really expensive. Why is that?
Why does (should) it cost thousands of dollars to transfer parental rights from one person to another?
There are many reasons people want to adopt. But all of them lead back to wanting to better the life of a child.
My manager from my serving days posted on FB the other day, their issues trying to conceive, and that they are going the adoption route but it is expensive. Not to mention all the other expensive medical treatments they have tried. I told him best wishes, but wanted to do more.
I have tried to get him on here (steem/it) because his wife makes some amazing food, they take great photography, and they are a very active couple. But so far no dice.
I'm hoping the community here can make an impact on their lives, by helping them make the life of an individual who will be, or is already, on an adoption list.
How cool would it be to make this couple's dreams come true, out of the blue, by a diverse cryptocurrency group? I would so love to see this happen. So if you can donate , head to their page, and if you can't help monetarily, and you have FB, leave an inspirational comment on their page here.
If you want to help spread the word for these amazing people, please do so by using the #changelives tag, thx, and don't hesitate to re-steem or share on other social media sites.
What an incredible gesture @intothewild! It is a good question. Why is it so expensive to adopt. Another couple homesteading in our valley brought home their precious adopted baby last month so it's a very real question to me. I also don't understand why so many are denied? At least here in South Africa I see it. There are so many abandoned and unwanted children but the really good homes get turned down. Tragic. But I'm happy to see you beautiful wife had a good home, and how incredible that because of her adoption you two have a match made in Heaven!

Thanks so much for your comment. I am extremely lucky to have her in my life, best thing that ever happened to me.
I think the red tape and governmental paperwork are the culprits behind the price. I would never want someone to get pregnant for the sheer purpose of selling their baby and making a profit, but at the end of the day, it shouldn't be such an arduous trek to transfer guardianship.
Maybe instead of using third parties (like adoption agencies), the birth parents find an appropriate family for the child before it's even born, and then just signs over rights. Seems inexpensive and easy to me.

There are probably options. Although I think there's always someone dishonest, cruel who do not consider the interests of the baby. In South Africa our local people get given a special disability allowance for special needs children. Sounds helpful. But these teenage girls then make sure to have plenty of alcohol and rely on the government for a huge allowance, with no consideration to the damaged children (some who don't live very long or get pawned off on another caring family member)

That is really unfortunate, and I'd be hard pressed to say that SA is not alone in that regard. When you (govt) give incentive's for bad behavior, you're going to get bad behavior. I think all of human behavior is based on incentive, we do stuff because of positive benefits, regardless if they are truly detrimental to our overall life/health...think drug addiction.
But in the case of statism and general welfare, this meme always comes to mind.

It is sad that it is made so challenging and unaffordable to many but then again, I suppose... if it were something that was "too easy" you may have the wrong candidates putting applications in all over the place.
I hope you succeed in your very kind and thoughtful gesture towards your manager. 🙂
