Music has become so original. No longer does an artist need to stick to one specific genre or style. This experimentation and freedom has brought us some truly unique and groundbreaking songs. Our recent discovery Chantal pours everything she has into creating music that is fresh and all her own.
We had a chance to chat with her about how she got where she is and what the future holds. Enjoy the interview here:
First off, What made you decide to go with the one word name Chantal?
I wanted a name that represented whom I am as an artist, having a stage name would have been fun, but Chantal is simply who I am. Furthermore, I like that ‘Chant’ recalls the French word ‘to sing’, so there is that.
How would you describe your music?
I’d describe my music how I’d describe my room: chaotic. I studied jazz but ended up playing in pop/rock bands, and to top that up I produced a few RnB tracks. I love writing strong and meaningful lyrics that relate to important events, that is why I invest 100% in each single, I’d never sing about something I don’t believe in. I think music should make an impact and be revolutionary. In regards to my style, think of it as a late-90’s meets 2000.
Which artists have had the biggest influence on the Chantal sound?
Jojo has definitely been an outstanding point of reference in terms of sound and vocals. This artist has an extraordinary capacity to convey her message, and at the same time produces revolutionary beats. I also look up to P!nk in terms of artistic production and visuals, I like mixing up different performing arts.
Your music seems to break conventional genre lines. How do you set yourself free?
It’s great that you think that! In fact, I’ve always tried to compromise with the fact that I desperately miss the 90’s, but music has become so diversified nowadays, that we have so many more new influences. I love experimenting on new music and mixing different genres, but when it comes to writing and singing, I’m pretty intense.
How does a song come together for you? What is your writing process?
I have no set timelines for writing songs, I can range from a few hours to a few weeks. My writing process is over when I feel that I said everything I had to in the song.
What do you hope the listener will take away from a Chantal song?
Definitely the lyrics! Communicate feelings and move the audience is my biggest objective; if I can move one single person with my music, my goal is achieved.
Rumor is that you have a couple of music videos coming out in early 2019. Tell us about that?
Absolutely! I’m very excited to release the music video of 5 AM early in February. This production has been directed by the Italian cinema producer Simone Vrech and will see the combination urban settings with contemporary dance. We have been filming in Italy, so the settings are going to be breathtaking. I don’t want to spoil too much, so you’ll have to be tuned to our YouTube channel!
What advice would you give other artists creating original sounding music?
Be yourself and don’t compromise your music! Being able to choose is our biggest power, don’t let anyone take that away from you.
Where do you see the career of Chantal one year from today?
On tour around Europe and finishing my masters in economics and creative arts, hopefully! I would never stop following my dreams, so I see myself doing music for a really long time.
