A man has been arrested over the death of a man allegedly stabbed while trying to help a woman in a NSW town.
Glen Smith had only become engaged to his partner two weeks before he was killed.
The 35-year-old was allegedly killed just a block away from his home in Bolton Park, Lake Macquarie.
Police confirmed a 32-year-old man was arrested in a fast food restaurant in Belmont and taken to Belmont Police Station, where he was charged with murder.
Witnesses tried desperately to save Mr Smith after he was allegedly attacked on Leumeah Street.
His fiancée, Michelle Bell, who was also there, said: “He collapsed in my arms, I was rocking him and rocking him.
"I wish we had just gone inside and closed the door.
"It was senseless and it was stupid and he had no right to take him away from us."
Witness Frank Newman said he tried to save Mr Smith by doing chest compressions.
Another neighbour called the attack "horrifying".
"It scares you silly. You don’t know what’s going to happen from one day to the next," he said.
The accused murderer was refused bail and will appear in Newcastle Local Court tomorrow.
