Jesus said: Therefore when you perform acts of charity, do not sound a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets. Matthew 6:2

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus summarized in practical terms the ethics of the Kingdom of God, the dominion or empire of God's perfections. And continuing with the teaching of the sapiential books such as the Book of Proverbs, Ben Sira and Wisdom, Jesus explained what the blessedness of mercy consists of: "Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy" Matthew 5:7.
And mercy (compassion, kindness, gentleness) is a spiritual gift of great importance within the Christian faith because the opposite of mercy is impiety, the hostility and destructiveness directed towards others. Examples of impiety were the tyrants Sennacherib, Nebuchadnezzar, and Antiochus IV Epiphanes, who made oppression and terror a way of governing.
The genuine mercy is the spiritual gift that makes concord possible, that is, the friendship between citizens as such and the bonds of solidarity towards the weakest in society, orphans, widows, and the sick. This is why Lord Jesus with his wisdom rejected those acts of charity and mercy that are just a facade to hide selfishness and secret objectives: "Therefore when you perform acts of charity, do not sound a trumpet before you as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and in the streets, so that they may have glory from men. Truly I say to you, they have their recompense" Matthew 6:2.
The true beatitude is beyond pettiness, contempt, and human selfishness. The Kingdom of God and its mercy constitute a concrete reality that transforms the imperfect nature of man to carry out a plan of God: "Be perfect, therefore, as your heavenly Father is perfect" Matthew 5:48.
