Letters from women in prison. This is why I do what I do.
The love they share is light on a path to my own healing. The inspiration they give me can't be found among free men. The motivation they spew is still beyond me.
These strong women make feel lucky to be at home with mine. They remind me what freedom is and how most of us take it for granted. How we never really pursue it fully.
In a way they are more free to be themselves. Free to be free even while imprisoned which sometimes works vice versa with the free men. Majority of free men are imprisoned within themselves.
They talk about their past, present and the future. About their abusive husbands and relatives. About shitty things they went through before prison. As good as it is to be trusted with so much, it's sad to know that women still go through so much.
Some are there because they couldn't stomach the abuse anymore so they did their worst to free themselves but ended up on death row.
Others were looking for a 'better' life for their children and ended up straying from doing what was right to doing what was necessary to survive.
Some even have no clue how they ended up being jailed but are doing their best to serve whatever sentences our not so fair judicial system handed them. Sigh
However they found themselves in there or whoever they are, they have stories too. But the stigma in our society is enough for someone to ask me why I would bother doing what I do.
Honestly, sometimes it's depressing but I am staying either way. This to me, is a healing way to give back to the society.
After my usual creative class, I was treated to home-fries lunch and a glass of fresh juice by one of my colleagues. This was delicious!

Very interesting to hear! I am new to your profile (found you through the Make A Minnow initiative - congrats!), so I have to ask, what is it you do?

I volunteer to teach inmates creative writing in the largest correctional women institution in my country. I am among what we call 'Beyond the Sentence' team.
Thank you for coming :)
