During World War II, he volunteered for service in the U.S. Air Force and was a radio operator and aerial gunner on a B-25.

After the war, Heston landed a breakthrough role in Cecil B. DeMille's The Greatest Show on Earth (1952). He then went on to star in two Biblical epics, The Ten Commandments and Ben Hur.
