Chess problem 42 / Schachaufgabe 42steemCreated with Sketch.

Hi, after a while some chess for you again! :)

The position below arose in an online rapid chess game. I had the white pieces and placed my queen very optimistically on c1.
To be honest I expected my opponent to resign, and he actually granted my wish, because he didn't see any reasonable defense against the threatening Qh6. However we are all humans only, and with very few time remaining on our clocks we both oversaw that black still has some resources available to defend himself.

What could black have played to prevent the direct deciding attack on his king? That's the main question ... But even after the best black defense white still has some amazing ideas to save his advantage ... do you see how?

Very interesting problem, not easy to discover as the moves are so "quiet" , no forced lines....

Suspect that this is beyond my chess ability!
Black rook to e8 pins the white pawn on e5 (due to white King trapped on back row) allowing black Queen to take white bishop on f6 if white Queen moves to h6. But white can counter with bishop to d7 forking Queen and Rook. White Queen has to run to b6. Immediate danger avoided by black but at the loss of rook for bishop and still in poor position.

Great ideas, you go into the right direction:

  1. ... Rfe8!
  2. Qh6? Qxf6! (If 2. Bd7!? Qc5 3. Bxe8 Rxe8 the position is unclear, if then 4. Qh6 black plays Qf8.)
  3. exf6 Re1#

What is white's best answer against the good defending move 1. ... Rfe8?

Great answer, but I think you mean Black Queen has to run to b6 instead of "White Queen has to run to b6". After that, white bishop takes the rook at e8 and the remaining black rook takes the white bishop at e8. The game can go a few ways after that, but as you say, black is still in a poor position. I can't see a way white can guarantee immediate victory at this point though.

Yes, 1. ... Rfe8 is the best defending move.
Now it is on you to find an interesting continuation for white.
(I will sleep now, so don't wonder if I won't answer immediately to your next ideas. :) )

Ah, yes. Black Queen!
