On a positive note, this match and some further investment on my part, has helped to propel me firmly into the top 1000 at Number 939 on steemwhales

g8->g2 is probably ok, but it's harder to read all the possibilities, so I figured it wasn't worth it for one pawn, when we'll be this far ahead in material after exchanging rook for queen.

yes, he can check with pawn, followed by king x pawn, rook checks king, king retreats back. But I don't see a move for him afterwards, so he's just sacrificing his pawn.

Black King might be better off not having that pawn.his rook and queen near each other is bad news plus his bishop and knight in the other end.black king will not have enough to maneuver.
I dont know but with G8 to G2..i feel it will stop his rook by checking his king..its not just the pawn.

Dang my slow computer. I was also toying with moving G8 - G2 to take his pawn and put him in check again before coming back to G7 to take the queen. I decided it might give too much wriggle room. My hesitation cost me dearly :-)

just saw your post above (hope steem fixes the indent limit someday), but I guess you're right, he couldn't really block with his knight because of f4->f3. So g8>g2 probably was best move.
