Cooked Freezer Chicken
Feeding from the Freezer
Cook Chicken, Cool, Freeze, Use
In this post series “Feeding from the Freezer” I am going to write about the One thing that is very versatile and handy to have…. That is Cooked Chicken.
I buy the family packs of mainly Chicken Breast, sometimes Boneless skinless thighs. I spend 25 minutes grilling them on a electric indoor Grill and that 25 mins saves me when the hustle and bustle of dinner comes or saves time with lunch meals.
Its nice knowing you have back up meals or easy items to whip up something in under 20 mins.
I season them with a basic Salt, Pepper, Onion powder, Garlic Powder and a little oil. I usually just use vegetable oil, but I am sure any oil you are fond of, would work just fine. I would love to know what you used!
So lets talk “To Do” on this Freezer Prep.
• Buy the chicken.---
I know, sometimes the most difficult job is going to the store. Finding the best deal and searching for what store has the best sales. If you have children, like me, store shopping is full of, “ let my brain multitask to the extreme of thinking, looking at my list if I have one hopefully, occupying my two young children, keeping them engaged in some conversation about the donut or cookie they get but when were all done shopping, smiling and trying to be polite to other customers that walk by or trying to get by you, forgetting that one thing six aisles down and contemplating if its even worth it to go back and get it or press on with the rest of your list.” Yes. Shopping requires a lot of mental work, at least with young ones under three. Lol.
• Prep the chicken. ---
If Breast are thick, I cut them in half of there thickness. If they are smaller or its the chicken thighs you are using I just place them in a large bowl ; season to your liking of salt, dash of pepper, Garlic and Onion Powder with enough oil to lightly coat your chicken.
• Cook the chicken.--- I use a grill like this below. Not the same one. I bought mine at a thrift store for 5 dollars, but it gets the job done. Oven works too.
When Grill is hot and ready, place chicken on grill and close top. I usually let chicken cook 5 - 7 mins. Place aside on plate and keep grilling other chicken till done.
( If you choose not to grill your chicken, Oven bake them in a covered baking dish, on 350degrees for 20-30 mins (add time if needed) till cooked thoroughly )
• Cool in Fridge---
This might seem like a step that could be easily skipped, But don’t. You want to completely cool your food before it goes in the freezer! It is important because other wise when it goes to the Freezer it will freeze from the outside- in at a slower rate and will pull moister from your food making the outside of your meat or food hard. So make sure you cool it for at least an hour if not two, before bagging and freezing.
• Bag, Tag, Freeze---
I like to use the Ziplock freezer bag with pump.
You can get it relatively cheap if you don’t own a vacuum sealer. I like to write on the bag before I put food in it, if I can remember. Otherwise write what your bagging, the month/year your freezing it, and place it in a nice flat spot in the freezer. I like to freeze a few whole and a couple sliced. If your not sure what you are going to use it for, freeze whole, you can always cut it later. If your not interested in another purchase for the kitchen, you can use regular freezer safe Ziploc bags if you plan on using it with in a month. I have done this as well
as pictured below and works just fine. But not for more than a couple weeks so just keep that in mind.
• Ready to use---
My favorite part! Using the instant, delicious, cooked meat for your meals!
So many things you can do with chicken. Take it out of the freezer and while your prepping other items for your meal either place in warm bowl of water or leave on counter till ready to heat up, Or just take right out of freezer and heat up.
Heres a list of ideas I use it for.
. .
~Teriyaki Chicken--- (Pictured above) (Store bought sauce, with side of veggies (broccoli) and rice ( minute brown rice if I’m really short on time)
~Chicken Salad --- Your favorite Salad greens, with sliced veggies, Fruit like apples, pears, cranberries if you like, favorite dressing topping with warmed sliced chicken.
~Chicken Salad Sandwich ---- Classic Chicken Salad sandwich, Cubed Cooked Chicken coated in mayo, touch of mustard, diced celery, diced onion, pepper, onion and garlic powder, celery salt or salt. Serve warm or cold on your favorite bread, Toasted or not, with a side of fruit or veggies ( or chips )
~Chicken Soup--- Your favorite recipe with the chicken already cooked! Check out my Post on my Freezer Chicken Soup with some tips on how to save on prep time. Can you guess what I do to save on prep time with the soup prep? Check it out.
~Chicken Sandwich--- Sliced deli style with toppings of your choice, on bread of your choice. I like mayo, bacon, lettuce, tomato, cheese, and avocado. How do you make your sandwich?
~Chicken Tacos--- Sliced the chicken or finely slice, warm in pan and coat with taco seasoning with a little water to help coat seasoning to chicken. Use it for your Tacos, burritos, Mexican bowls, or Nachos!
