KANSAS CITY, Mo. Kansas City shut down Geno Smith and Seattle's struggling offence, Patrick Mahomes tossed two touchdown passes, and the Chiefs defeated the Seahawks 24-10 on Saturday.
With two games remaining, the AFC West champion Chiefs (12-3) remained tied with Buffalo for the best record in the conference thanks to Travis Kelce's six receptions for 113 yards and touchdown catches from Kadarius Toney and Jerick McKinnon.
The Chiefs handed coach Pete Carroll's Seahawks (7-8) club its fifth loss in six games and dealt them an almost fatal blow to their postseason chances by stopping them twice on fourth down and intercepting their Pro Bowl quarterback in the end zone.
The most promising player for Seattle was Kenneth Walker III, who ran for 107 yards but was unable to cross the goal line.
16 straight regular-season victories for Kansas City vs NFC opponents.
Similar to the rest of the nation, the Midwest experienced some extremely cold weather; during kickoff, the wind chill was minus-2, which was an improvement over the previous two days. In fact, it had been so cold that when workmen attempted to remove the tarp three hours prior to kickoff, it had frozen to the field.
A dozen Seahawks, including DK Metcalf and his fellow wide receivers, didn't seem to mind when they emerged from the tunnel bare-chested to begin their pregame warm-ups on the ice-covered field shortly after.
They might not have been chilly, but Seattle's offensive was positively arctic.
Smith and company only gained 18 yards on their first 15 plays while playing without wide receiver Tyler Lockett, who underwent surgery this week for a broken hand, and they were forced to punt on their first five drives.
The Chiefs also profited from the sluggish start. A few minutes later, Mahomes delivered a pass out of the backfield to McKinnon for another score to cap a 63-yard TD drive. And the Chiefs had already gone out to a 17-0 lead by the time Harrison Butker blasted a 47-yard field goal late in the second.
The drive was greatly aided by defensive penalties, even when Seattle managed a field goal before halftime.
In the second half, the Chiefs failed to increase their lead, but the Seahawks were unable to reduce it.
When tight end Colby Parkinson was stood up after a reception, they failed on fourth down at the Kansas City 34. They also failed on fourth down again when Laquon Treadwell failed to run his route to the first-down marker and came up short. Finally, they failed to score at the Kansas City 22 when quarterback Geno Smith overthrew Treadwell and was intercepted by Juan Thornhill in the end zone.
On the following play, when Mahomes connected Kelce with two deep passes before running to the pylon for the game-winning score, the Chiefs, who have been criticised for failing to put down struggling opponents, finally did it.
