National Child Abuse Prevention Month
President Donald J. Trump just publicized his support for National Child Abuse Prevention Month and stated “I call upon all Americans to be alert to the safety and well-being of children and to support efforts that promote their physical, emotional, and developmental health”.
What is National Child Abuse Prevention Month? Due to a hike in child abuse and neglect, President Nixon took action and signed Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA) in 1974. The Act provided Federal funds to the States to establish programs, prevention and treatment of child abuse and neglect. By 1982, Congress designated June 6-12 as National Child Abuse Week. This soon changed by 1983 when President Reagan proclaimed April to be the first National Child Abuse Prevention Month; this tradition continues till this day.
