Childhood Plans

As Children, We all dream of what we want to be when we grow up. In the Community where I grew up most of the kids wanted to be lawyers, doctors, soldiers, and so on.

I wanted to be a doctor growing up but at Stage 4 in Basic school, I developed some love for police work, I liked how they dress and everything about that work so I changed my mind from being a doctor to a police officer.

In grade 7 in Basic school, I had a change of mind from being a police officer to being an architect because of technical drawings.

In High School, my school wasn't offering technical courses so I had to read Visual Art instead. Again my plan of becoming an architect changed to a Graphic designer. After High school, I had to work for a while to get money to continue with tertiary education. I had the chance to work with an IT Company for a year. At the Company, I was taught how to develop different kinds of websites (eCommerce, Organisations, and education websites). Wow! this stuff was cool and I enjoyed doing it. The next year applied to Read Bsc. Computer Science in the University because I wanted to be creating websites, mobile Apps, and Softwares. Am currently in my final year at the university and the experience is wonderful and am now convinced this is what I was born to be (A Computer Scientist).

I think that our choices can be heavily influenced by our parents. Some parents only want their children to study subjects like engineering, maths, science or medicine. This can make young people feel pressured into studying certain subjects, which can be stressful. In my case, my parent didn't really pressure me about what I should be in the future.

At the end of the day, there's no rush to decide what you want to do with the rest of your life. Many people change careers several times during their lifetime, so there's always time to pursue a different career path! Like I did growing up.
Who knows maybe I might do my Mphil in another field aside from Computer Science and end up having another career.
