switching to simple, functional clothing?

in children •  7 years ago

Over the last couple of years, we have made the effort as a family to rid of some clothing.

We have eliminated most all non-natural fibers. Sticking to cotton, linen & wool.

We have been blessed over the years to get hand-me-down clothing from cousins. I sort through it now, only keeping 100% cotton in functional pieces.

I dont know if "functional" is the right word?
To me, it means a clothing item that will last for multiple kids, sturdy, comfy, modest, and not obnoxious (character prints, glitter, etc).

My daughters do not like wearing jeans. They each have 1 pair for riding horses.
Otherwise they wear cotton leggings, or cotton sweat pants. Some cotton T-shirts, but mostly they have a small assortment of comfy, modest cotton or linen dresses.
Leggings with knee holes get turned into long bike type shorts for under summer dresses.
Nothing strappy or super short out of the house.

Myself, I own 3 pair of jeans (my go to winter wardrobe), 1 pair of work/riding jeans, 4 shorts (cotton or linen), 1 pair work/garden shorts, 2 skirts, 3 dresses (a comfy, a casual, a dressy), a plethora of tank tops to wear under every shirt (makes for instant modest nursing tops), and a few tshirt/tunic/blouses. Ive ditched anything I dont wear within a 1-2wk span.

Last week, @themyrrhmaid's daughters passed down a few Mennonite dresses to my daughters.

They have worn them for 3 days in a row!
They are simple, comfy, modest, cotton, and functional!

They are in love with this style! They claim they are willing to get rid of most of their current clothes to make room for more simple dresses !

Plus! They like to act like little servants while wearing them! SCORE for me! Extra cleaning help! haha!

I am searching for sewing patterns now! (suggestions welcome!)

Those are pretty cute and funny that they act like servants while wearing them! Ha. I like the idea - I bet you could look up prairie dress and find something. My mom sewed me something like that for a prairie day at school one year with a bonnet.

I have a super cute bonnet pattern to try! I will look for a pattern soon... Im hoping to find a pdf printable pattern, i prefer them over store bought/pattern paper.
I will update when i find one!

@corrielaine

I bet you can find one! Do keep us posted. :)

Where do you get your linen clothing?

Usually thrift store finds :)

They are right, these dresses work, LOL!

I would love to know if you find a easy sewing pattern.
I make teir skirts for my girl and I. It’s easier to find long skirts for woman then children. I sometimes get two or three sizes to large on clothes and tailor them for my girl.

I will update for sure. I honestly havent had time to look much yet.
