This is quite commonly used in our curries in South India. They aren't the most spicy as far as chillies are concerned but more importantly they add flavour to the meal.
It's quite important that the food is flavourful and Indian cuisine irrespective of which corner of tbe country it may be is always full of flavours.
This type of red Chilli is often used in Mangalorean cuisine. If you are in India and get to travel to my city, don't forget to try all the local food and I bet you that you'll never run out of options easily.

And... Yes, I use this variety of chillies which gives a good color as well as flavor to our curries and is less spicy....
