We are in for a rough day Friday.
Weather will remain tranquil through midday tomorrow, before the fun begins tomorrow afternoon. A few showers are possible, but the heaviest rain arrives after overnight into Friday morning. 1-3" of rain are likely, and a flood wash has been issued for Long Island and the entire surrounding area.
Additionally we will have gusty winds out of the SE that will help push water ashore, leading to coastal flooding. Winds may gust 40-50 mph. As to the degree of coastal flooding, right now it looks like minor to moderate, which means water levels 2-4 feet above normal tides. There is a full moon on Saturday, so it will be interesting to see if that exacerbates the problem. Hey, at least it will be near 60 degrees Friday!
(Winter begins at 5:23 pm)
Skies are slow to clear on Saturday, but eventually will. It will once again turn windy, and this time colder. As we head into Christmas Eve, there may be a few rain or snow showers around. The Euro had them the last few days, now the GFS does. Even if it is cold enough for snow, I don't see anything much more than a coating. For an official White Christmas, we need 1" on the ground on Christmas Day, and I just don't see it. Close, but not enough.
Christmas Day looks cold and dry, but we will have to keep an eye on another system the day after, which could bring some more bullish snow showers to the area. Generally cold weather is expected right into the New Year, so any storm systems will warrant close attention. --Geoff
