Most of China's cities have millions of people offering multiple options for food, lodging, transportation and activities.
It is possible to travel for less than $10/day in many parts of China, but most of the time I do not want to...
There are a few ways to save money when traveling. Hostels are becoming more popular in China and I have found hostels for as little as $5/day. Most of the time, I prefer to have my own space and privacy, so I choose an inexpensive hotel option, usually $20-$30. The first hotel (in Yiwu) shown in this video is worse than what I usually find, but after I changed rooms, it was much cleaner and quieter. Do not be afraid to ask them to change your room if you are not satisfied. I almost always ask the hotel to give me a quiet and smoke free room, but there are times I get an awful room (like this one).
Street food will be the least expensive way to eat. You can eat for a couple dollars/day if you stick to rice, dumplings and stuffed breads. Going to a local supermarket is also a good way to reduce the cost of food and water. Surprisingly, McDonald's, KFC and other fast food are fairly expensive options in China.
When I am in China for an extended period of time, I make a concerted effort to minimize the money spent on lodging because I would rather use that money for other activities and adventures. I will select the least expensive options when I am going to be out of the room most of the day, but on days when I need R&R or expect to be in the room more frequently, I select a better room for those days.
Booking.com, Couchsurfing and Airbnb are all good ways to find lodging that meets your requirements.
