The longest glass bridge in the world has been used for the first time. People with a fear of heights better stay away from this beautiful piece of architecture : the bridge is 488 meters long and hangs at 218 meters high, between two steep cliffs in Shijiazhuang, the capital of the northern Chinese province of Hebei.
Yesterday the first adventurers walked on the glass bridge. The Chinese news agency Xinhua posted on Facebook and Twitter photos of people who walked on the bridge with their obligatory selfie stick. The real daredevils even dared to jump up and down.
The glass construction is 488 meters long, 4 meters wide and floats 218 meters above the ground. She is occupied with 1,077 glass panels, each measuring 4 centimeters thick and weighing 70 tons in total. You have to protect your footwear, probably to keep the glass clean.
Whoever forgets that he or she walks on glass, can enjoy the impressive surroundings: mountain views, waterfalls, old cities and temples.
The walkway is designed to move slightly when visitors walk over it. According to Hebei Bailu Group, the local tourist company that designed and built the construction, the bridge is completely safe.
We worked on the bridge for 1.5 years. The construction can carry up to 3,000 people, but we only allow 600 people at a time. We check the bridge every day. - Liu Qiqi
