In many westerners' eyes, Chinese have been characterized as hard-working, smart, good at mathematics but bad at foreign languages, fond of brand cars, houses and luxuries. Moreover, Chinese like to hang together as Benjamin Franklin, American polymath and one of the Founding Fathers of the United States, said
we must hang together, or we will be surely hanged separately. In general, most of these facts are true. Chinese lay great importance to academic performance. Besides, appearing ostentatious isn't a faux pas in China, it's often the goal. So it's safe to say that it's not that Chinese like studying but that they believe studying hard and graduating from famous universities is the quickest and easiest way to make a fortune. After all, no one likes to study. When you ask a child born in 1990s what he or she wants to do when he or she grows up, majority of them will answer that they want to be a scientist. So the ultimate goal for majority of Chinese is to get rich. It doesn't matter how you achieve this goal. Nowadays, as economy prospers in China, celebrities and movie stars make tons of money each year. As a result, Chinese young generations are setting out to pursue their acting career. Since the standards for celebrities and movie stars are extremely high in terms of appearance, Chinese, especially females, invest tons of money every year in cosmetic surgery and makeups. If you ask a child born in 2000s what he or she wants to do in the future, there is a huge possibility that he or she will respond that he or she dreams of becoming an actor or actress.
