Yea, brother, let me have joy of thee in the Lord -
"By demonstrating to me this support in getting my companion and a brother as I ask." The expression "in the Lord," here appears to imply that, if this demand was in all actuality, he would perceive the hand of the Lord in it, and would get it act of kindness some favor from him.
Refresh my bowels in the Lord -
The "bowels," in the Scriptures, are consistently talked about as the seat of the affections - meaning ordinarily the upper viscera, embracing the heart and the lungs; look at the ref at Isaiah 16:11.
Wherefore my bowels shall sound like an harp for Moab,
and mine inward parts for Kirharesh.
The reason is, that in any profound feeling this part of our frame is unconventionally influenced and affected, or we feel it there. Think about Robinson's Lex. on the word σπλάγχνον See this outlined finally in Sir Charles Bell's" Anatomy of Expression," p. 85, following Ed. London, 1844. The thought here is, that Paul had such a delicate love for Onesimus as to give him awesome concern and uneasiness. The word rendered "refresh" - ἀνάπαυσόν anapauson-signifies "to offer rest to, to offer rest, to free from distress or mind;" and the sense is, that by accepting Onesimus, Philemon would make the profound and deep anxiousness of Paul stop, and he would be quiet and fulfilled; think about the ref at Philemon 1:7.
For we have great joy and consolation in thy love, because the bowels of the saints are refreshed by thee, brother.
