PARABLE OF THE GOOD SAMARITAN
(LUKE 10:25– 37)
It isn't coincidentally that the two biggest authoritative Reformers of the sixteenth-century Reformation, Martin Luther and John Calvin, had both been tireless student of the law. As Luther and Calvin contemplated the law of God, they were headed to the gospel, in light of the fact that the law left them in lose hope.
The place of the law is a vital thought in the life of Christians, and Jesus frequently talked about the law amid His natural service. The law gives the setting to one of Jesus' best-known illustrations or parables, the parable of the great Samaritan in Luke 10:25– 37.
The story of the great Samaritan is incited by a legal advisor's short cross examination of Jesus. Luke composes that the attorney asked Jesus questions not on the grounds that he was really looking for shrewdness from the Lord, but instead to put Jesus under serious scrutiny. So he asked, "Instructor, what might I do to acquire eternal life?" (v. 25). As a legal advisor in Israel, he should be an lord of the Old Testament law. So Jesus stated, "What is composed in the Law? How would you read it?" (v. 26).
The legal advisor replied by discussing the Great Commandment, drawn from the Shema in Deuteronomy 6:4– 5. He stated, "You might love the Lord your God with everything that is in you and with your entire being and energetically and with all your mind," and after that he included this postscript: "and your neighbor as yourself " (Luke 10:27). He had remembered the Shema, similarly as each student of the law had done, thus it was not hard to answer this question. Jesus let him know, "You have said it accurately; do this, and you will live" (v. 28).
