Growing Up an Addict Volume 31

in christian-trail •  7 years ago

So there I was, under investigation by a State Trooper detective and a county Sheriff detective for breaking into another State Trooper Detective's house and stealing all of his guns. I had told the cops that I had gotten the stolen bow I tried to pawn from a crack dealer and they wanted me to do an undercover buy from him so they could get a warrant to search.

Things were not looking good for me.

Was I going to do it?

My girl and I left our apartment and drove to her mother's house to figure things out. Our apartment was a constant party at that point and it was just altogether out of control, guns and drugs constantly. I needed time to think.

When we arrived at her mom's we weren't there but 20 minutes before my pager went off. Yes, I had a pager as there weren't a lot of cell phones yet in 1999. I went to the pay phone around the corner from her mom's house and called the number and it turned out to be the State Police detective wanting to know if I had made up my mind yet.

I told her I had some questions and asked her where I could meet her. She said she would come see me and less than five minutes later she was there. They must have been sitting around the corner from my house just waiting and watching.

What's in it for me?

So my girl and I got into the car and the cops started telling me that I needed to help them so they could get the guns off the street. I was trying to make excuses for why I couldn't do it. I mean I really didn't want to be known as a snitch in the world I came from.

That gets people killed...

Thank God for my girl.

As I was spitting and sputtering and trying to figure out what I was going to do my girl finally asked the question that solved it for me. She looked at the cops and flat out asked them if I did it would I be out of trouble.

The cops told us that they did not have the power to make that decision, the prosecutor had to.

Then she asked them, so what he is supposed to do this for you based on just your word that you won't get him in trouble? They said they couldn't promise anything.

That was all I needed to hear...

So now I am screwed.

My girl and I had been talking about moving out of state for awhile and I had actually had enough money to do it right before the cops started asking questions.

Now I had nothing to do but wait to see what was going to happen.

We decided to stay back at my girls mom's house for awhile and basically left our apartment to whoever was there at the time. It didn't take long before the cops showed up to arrest me.

One morning there was a knock on the door and the cops were there. They came in the house and made a point of handcuffing me in front of my step daughter and new daughter. I will never forget my step daughter crying and asking them to not take her Daddy. I was a piece of trash but I loved that kid and I was the only Dad she ever knew.

Before it was all over I was looking at a 45 year minimum in prison.
