Working That 12th Step and Giving It Away to Keep it

in christian-trail •  7 years ago

As most of you guys know I am in recovery for drugs and alcohol, and I work the twelve steps of Alcoholics Anonymous. Even though I was mainly a Heroin addict (Really a MORE addict...I wanted MORE!) the thing that always got me tricked into using again more than anything else was alcohol, so I stick with A.A.

###After you work the steps with a sponsor...Become one!

The twelfth step says "Having had a spiritual awakening as a result of these steps, we carried this message to alcoholics and practiced these principles in all our affairs..." after you have worked through the steps yourself, you should help others to work through them to, that is how we pass it on and do the service work that keeps us sober ourselves.

As the resident manager at Endeavor House I have been a mentor to some of our residents temporarily until they could be set up with a permanent one, but I have avoided being a sponsor to any of the residents, just to not have a conflict of interest.

A couple of weeks ago I asked the rest of the staff what they thought about me taking on sponsees. I had been asked by one of the guys, but I had to defer until I got an idea of what the other staff felt about it. They all said that they didn't see a problem with it, as long as I didn't show favoritism to anyone. I assured them that I would not, and told the resident I could sponsor him.

About a week later, the House Manager's son (Who is a resident here...) asked me to be his sponsor too.

And then there were 2

So what does this look like?

Basically, so far I have printed off some worksheets and had the guys complete them, then we discussed their answers. No biggee. I really haven't done much more than what I would have been doing in my duty as resident manager.

That will change soon.

When we get to the fourth and fifth steps, I will basically hear these guys life story, the worst and the best. I will have to keep their confidence and deal with them just like everyone else here, it could end up being a challenge, but I think I am up to it.

Sponsors know best....Kinda

When it comes to being a sponsor, I try to do for them what my sponsor did for me, but sometimes I get stuck when I get a question I don't know the answer to. So what do I do? I call my sponsor and get his opinion!

See how this works here? My working with a sponsee, helps me to keep in touch with my sponsor. This is turn helps him to stay sober by keeping him grounded in the reality of where he came from. It really is amazing when you think about it.

Tonight's meeting

On Tuesday night there is an A.A. meeting at a lawyers office in the "Clark Hill" building. One of the lawyers at the firm is a member so he lets us use their conference room to hold a meeting. It is a formal meeting that is listed in the book and it is commonly known as the "Lawyers Meeting" There is a lot of good sobriety there and it is a good meeting to go to.

I told both of my sponsees I wanted them to go with me, and they did. They both spoke from the heart about where they are in recovery, and where they want to be. Overall, I get the impression that they both take it serious and are willing to put in the work to get better.

This might work out pretty good for all of us...
