Hey fellow Christian Steemians!
I’m new to Steemit, but I have one question for you: Are you tithing or planning to tithe your steem? Or giving God the “firstfruits”, as it’s called?
A tithe means “a tenth”, or a tenth of your income, and firstfruits means the first part of what income you’re blessed with, which can be less than a tenth, or MORE!
“Bring the full tithe into the storehouse, that there may be food in my house. And thereby put me to the test, says the Lord of hosts, if I will not open the windows of heaven for you and pour down for you a blessing until there is no more need.” - Malachi 3:10 (ESV)
I have gone from not tithing (before I became a Christian) to tithing to not tithing to tithing, and let me tell you: for me and my family, TITHING REALLY MAKES A DIFFERENCE!
It seems counterintuitive to give money from what you have been given and get more, BUT FOR ME IT WORKS!
Tomorrow, we’ll talk more about how tithing can benefit you, how to tithe, and the “protection” of tithing.
(Disclaimer: This is not financial advice, but an interpretation of what is commonly known as Biblical scripture and principles and a narration of the experiences of myself and others, which may or may not be your experiences. STEEM-ON!
Tithing is part of the Old Testament law for Israel. God promised them prosperity if they were obedient. God doesn't demand tithing from Christians nor does he promise prosperity for those that do.
(2 Corinthians 9:7-10 NIV) Each man should give what he has decided in his heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. {8} And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work. {9} As it is written: "He has scattered abroad his gifts to the poor; his righteousness endures forever." {10} Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness.

Yes, @barncat, this is true. In fact, in the New Testament, Jesus mentions tithing in Matthew 23:23 (NIV), telling the Pharisees that they should not neglect it without paying attention to justice, mercy and faithfulness. Of course, this is not telling us Christians to tithe, but it is, I believe, telling us to not neglect the principle. I was using the word "tithing" here as a metonym, denoting the general principle of giving a portion of what we earn back to the Lord. I'm sure you know that Jesus also said that we should be "...rich toward God." (Luke 12:21 NIV) In fact, hopefully we would give MORE than what is commonly thought of as the tithe (10%)! ;o). Thanks for your comment!
