Sparing a Thought for the Villains this Christmas

in christmas-spirit •  7 years ago

Everybody has a villain in their life.

For some it is somebody close or even intimately involved.

For others it may be somebody that they hold a more casual acquaintance with.

For others yet, they only know them by name and reputation.

And, for a few, the suspicion that one might be a villain by somebody's perspective might be all too real.

All these kinds of villains draw one's ire, serving as antagonists direct or not.

They can be regular - and they can be epic. Goofy or serious. Reluctant or indulging.

And yet beneath the myth of the exterior...

...the boisterous and even unpleasant behavior and actions...

...and the hard words and efforts at unapproachability...

...one could find a heart that beats nonetheless.

Does a tiny ember of heat exist within its cold and hard exterior? I do not know.

But Christmas is a time of year that inspires spending.

Lots of spending, consumption and profiteering.

Ahem...

And it can bring out the best in us also.

There is something about the holiday that extends beyond the religious significance of the day.

A form of goodwill that unifies us. A kinship forged of blood and ideals.

It is at this time that the light of humanity 'might' shine through in spite of the odds.

Of course, the Christmas ceasefire and truce of 1914 is the most famous example of all.

A tale of men who allowed the pain in their bodies and the yearning in their hearts to drive them into each others hands, at times with great loss - but overall building something of beauty - an understanding that pierces barriers of language and culture - which are not as different themsleves as one might have imagined, and sliced through danger and presumed mutual hatred to revert to their more natural selves.

It might not have lasted long - but if peace can break out in the madness of trench warfare - perhaps there exists hope for those same villains mentioned earlier.

Incidentally, here is an excellent video by 'Extra Credits' detailing that truce.

Inspiring.

Anyway - Christmas is also a time when individuals are inspired to set aside their prejudices, to reach out to he or she who would seem irredeemable.

While some personalities in history (or contemporary life) would seem irredeemable, to the point where one might well 'not' tolerate having a a cup of tea or coffee (or hot chocolate or eggnog) upon his or her table, I would like you to at least humour the concept.

For as long as there is no immediate danger of a physical attack, the good that can come of the simple gesture could outweigh the risks. A cold heart does not spontaneously grow warm. It is given a juimp-start - and that can sometimes require the courage to look beyond any potentially monstrous exterior personality to shine a little ray of warm to the core. Just maybe you'll set that heart alight.

Perhaps you will set a miracle in motion.

Perhaps the World could change through making just that one small concession.

To think about a villain this Christmas.

Perhaps they will return the favour.

Perhaps they'll be inspired to achieve greater things.

And then again - perhaps not.

Yes - I know that I've been scarce - kind of. :c)

I guess that I too have been bitten by the Christmas bug.

And I really wanted to treat a topic not often dealt with during this period of the year.

Like chainsaws and turkeys!
