December is a a crazy time for our kids... well, the end of the year is a crazy time (and a less than fun time for our wallets...). Both of our kids birthdays are scattered around the end of year period... and there are a number of festive events which means that they are spoilt with presents from the mythical creatures, parents, friends and relatives.
We do try to keep every event smallish... and they are great kids... in that they are happy with what they get and aren't demanding about the things that wish for (even if they don't get them...). However, every parent really has this desire to give them something that is in line with what they are wishing for... well, at least we do! So, it is a tough exercise in willpower to keep our exuberance in check... which we mostly do!
So, each event in the festive season (thank god, we don't also celebrate Three Kings... we have friends who have Sinterklaas, Christmas and Three Kings...)... still requires a degree of planning and plotting. From the gradual accumulation of presents through to the actual surprise delivery of the actual goods...
The accumulation phase is starting to get a little bit trickier... our oldest is starting to get a little bit clued in on what is happening. Partly, it is the rumours that are swirling around school... and the fact that she is a touch more observant in her older age. Still, she is still pretty naive in many ways...
This year, we really had to be quite careful with the lead up to the Sinterklaas Pakjes-avond... as she had it on rumour from her best friend that the boots were being filled by parents and not by the Pietjes. Still, we managed to deflect and distract... and she formed her own opinion without us needing to lie directly... or tell the truth either!
However, she has been wondering why we were receiving so many packages in such a short time.... to which I answered with the learning about Black Friday and Cyber Monday events. A story that was further enhanced by showing her my new monitor which was a toy that I got for myself! Interestingly enough, she hasn't asked what happened to the other boxes... after all, the monitor popped out of only one box... and not a few! Shhhhh.... Distract and deflect....
So, this afternoon... we are already plotting and planning our Sinterklaas pakjes-avond delivery of gifts for the Dutch present day (December 5th). At one point in time, we were considering missing this... but our kids go to a Dutch school, and we are trying to integrate... so it would be horrible if she was the only kid at school to not get presents... still, on our first try... we screwed it up by doing it on the wrong night! Ooops....
The trick for this year is that we are likely (due to my wife's work commitments...) to need to have the delivery happen in the afternoon... so, we have to construct a story about why it is the afternoon and not in the evening. Our simple story is that we are among some of the first houses being visited by Sinterklaas... so, thus the earlier delivery!
However, it does involve a bit of a trick with the actual delivery of the presents to the door... as most of our neighbours are working... and the remaining ones being a touch too old to knock the door, dump the presents and run away without being seen.
So, our current solution (to be enacted in a couple of hours...) is to have the presents stored in the garden shed. I bring back the oldest from her half day at school... my wife takes the kids upstairs to play.... and I will dump the presents in our backyard garden... near the back door. I don't think we can do the doorbell... seeing as it is on the wrong side.. but perhaps we will do it anyway... and then there will be the disappointment that there is nothing there. However, when they go to the living room, they will see the pakjes out the back! Well... that is the plan... thankfully it isn't raining!
So, like all plots and conspiracies... the secret is in keeping the plan simple, and restricted to as few people as possible.... probably not publishing the idea to a public blockchain on the internet before it is enacted would also be a good idea... but my youngest can't read (I'm typing this next to her.... how is that for audactious!)... and my oldest doesn't know of this dark corner of the internet!
Hopefully all goes smoothly... the next stop is 25th!

The children learn so quickly once at school from friends, reality is once the older one knows having to persuade them not to let on which is super difficult @bengy fun times ahead!

It all went well... in fact a little too well, the presents were sitting there for a little while before anyone noticed!

The way I do it is to start buying presents 2 months before, that way the cost is spread out...

It's so cute that your oldest, after hearing talk in school, is now questioning, albeit mildly at this point. If they're anything like I was, they want to keep believing at any cost, so your deflections are likely quite acceptable. :)
Nice post on the parent's joys and issues with young kids and Christmas season!

Yes... at the moment, she still really wants to believe! So, things are still in the imaginary mode!... but I really start to think that it is the last year for her... but then she will have fun being part of the conspiracy for the little one!

All ended up going quite nicely... in the end, I think my particular girls are really quite easy... they are excited and thankful for whatever they get... in fact, my oldest one told me that a few days before the actual night! I was a little surprised, but very happy and proud...

I remember the kids at school telling me there was no Santa and it was my parents who left the presents. I called them liars. 😂

Haha. Clever. We used to celebrat everything, local or foreign. Santa, Baby Jesus, the three magic Kings, you name it. Then, we got the latin american version of the holocaust and, speaking of plotting and planning, that was the end of celebrations for us. It has saved us a lot of money and worries. People got used to not even painting their houses or buying new clothes. You someone see pictures of you drinking on your whatsapp status or on social media, consider yourself kidnapped :)

Ouch... it must have been a shock to the system to go from millions of celebrations of everything under the Sun to nothing. Sorry to hear that it was such a drastic change... I'm sure that people will still celebrate in private anyway?

Yes, some people still find ways to celebrate, at a smaller scale. If there are relaties in other countries sending money, that helps. Many people refuse to let traditions die and find ways to keep them alive, but it is very painful not to be able to do much.
Last night, coincidentally, I attended a sort of xmas musical one of my daughters participated in. She is part of a chamber choir. There were some characters interspersing monologues about the beauty of xmas and the importance of celebrating it without the consumerist mentality dictating what to do. I can understand the value of some of that, but I sensed that the organizers of the event had some hidden agenda behind and it had to do with ameliorating people's anger and frustration by pitching the idea that xmas is more than buying stuff you probably do not need. The thing is we can't afford even the most basic things that we badly need now.
There was this monologue of an "old man" reminiscen reminiscing the different traditions and typical dishes (*hallacas, home-made drinks, chicken salad, ham bread, etc) at some point i felt like yelling shut-up at him. It was torturous to picture all those delicious things anyone could afford some years ago and which are now a luxury.
I stayed only because my daughter was singing

Well Sinterklaas Bengy, please let us know how your master plan worked out Lol.
Let's hope that there are no inquisitive animals about that would want to investigate the boxes hahaha
I don't suppose you have any monkeys over there otherwise you would have to invest in an extension ladder to get the boxes out of the trees.
Blessings!

Oh yes, I know well how you feel! I've gone through great lengths as well to keep the 'magic alive', so to speak. I only have one child anymore who might still believe in Santa Claus and after so many years of sneaking things about I think I'm going to have a celebratory drink when the time finally comes!

It is mixed thing... it is so much fun to have so much secrecy, but it needs a bit more work! How were you older kids when they found out? Were they happy to join the conspiracy for the younger ones?

They were all between 10-12. At one point I even had them believing in "St. Patrick", who would stumble into the house and leave me a four pack of Guinness the night before St Patricks Day.
They definitely enjoyed jumping into the conspiracy and get a big kick out of helping me set up stockings Christmas Eve!

lol I do not miss these machinations! For us, one night the tooth fairy forgot to come. When my distraught daughter woke me to tell me she had been passed over, I said "Oh my! YOu're right!" To which she responded "Are you the tooth fairy? Are you the Easter Bunny? ARE YOU SANTA CLAUS?" One careless remark and the jig was up.
Enjoy!

LOL, we have seen a very slow slow collapse... my oldest is pretty naive with these things.. she knows the Easter Bunny isn't real... but the other things still remain true for some weird reason! We were expecting a dam wall collapse like you had...

Oh, deflect! Deflect!!
We get to be a child for such a short time, I dislike how fast they grow up. Keep them believing, because the alternative is that the magic is gone before they are able to be okay with it.
I was a planner like that too! It's actually quite fun watching life through the eyes of a child. Thanks for sharing, Bengy!
Have a great day!

Hi @bengy. Great post. When my kids were young, they would look all over the house. So we had to wait until the night before to put items out. And kept the larger items, like bicycles in the garage or shed. They were the most curious little buggers you ever want to meet. And they would sit around discussing what they knew they were going to get for sure, lol
We had such laughs because they thought they were so smart. Have a great day, and take care. Good luck!
