Christmas Dreams of Mermaid Tails

in christmas •  6 years ago

In the plethora of packages under the tree on any given year, there is sometimes one that stands out from the rest. This year, that one was in a beautiful peacock box. Blues and greens swirled with glitter in a tell-tale sign of a gift born of love and generosity. What could it be?

As I opened the box, I was greeted with row after row of crocheted goodness in vivid colors stitched together in a long running row. I pulled on the material and it came loose from the box, fold after fold as if the box was never-ending.

The back side (inside?) of the weave flashed a different pattern entirely, subtle V shapes holding their side together. The colors melded, feeling fresh and somehow alive. As I pulled the material free it became apparent that it was a garment rather than your more typical blanket or throw.

Once free from the confines of the peacock box, the garment unfolded into a clearly recognizable shape. What's this life-size tail in front of me? Could it be? Stretched out on the floor the mermaid tail splished flippantly against the wooden backdrop, unaccustomed to such a dry environment. Turning it over, I found the perfect space hollowed out for my (currently) human legs.

Nestling into my mermaid tail, I snuggled deeper into the couch and dreamed of the ocean. Many thanks to Amanda for hand-crafting such a perfect gift. Each scale represents hours of thought, effort, and genuine kindness - not to mention the 13 stitched that went into every one.

I know you're going to love it - but Amanda tells me it is the first - and only - adult size mermaid tail she will ever make.

This is so beautiful! What a great crochet @mattifer! 💗🎁

Thank you! My sister-in-law made it for me. She knows I'm a mermaid at heart. :-D

@mattifer oh WOW! As a crocheter myself, I can tell that would take so many hours of patience and love. You are so blessed ((': blessed Christmas!

Yes! I'm definitely glad to be able to call her my sister-in-law. :-)

That is fantastic! What a gift to receive and the amount of dedication, effort and love that went in to it! Merry Christmas indeed :)

Yes! She worked on it all the time! I'm sure I would have quit long before it was finished. :-)

Hahaha true dedication there. I do love a challenge as long as it doesn't break me of course. I guess with the tail, the determination to finish was driven by the Christmas deadline Haha! Great stuff 🙂

Yay! Thanks so much!!! :-D

Gifts that are made with love are priceless. Must have taken a lot of hours to finish this mermaid tail. You have a truly great sister in law which is a blessing.

I can't even imagine how many hours she spent working on it. It's pretty incredible.

Yayayayayayayayayayaya!!!!

haha! howdy again mattifer! I've never seen anything like the box and I've never seen nor heard of a mermaid tail garment, so unique!

The tail is certainly one of a kind. There will never be another quite like it. :-D I only wish I could swish around in the ocean with it.

Howdy today mattifer! haha! That's funny. That thing looks so comfy and warm. Many people believe in Mermaids so there may be some out there!

If there are, I'll find them some day. :-) I just need to spend enough time in the ocean. It'll happen!

Howdy today mattifer! Oh so you love to be near the ocean? Wow, you guys have plans to leave Ohio as soon as possible right? How'd you get trapped there? But wait, your non-profit is based there, does that mean you're stuck there?

I do love the ocean, and yes, we'll be leaving Ohio in a couple years. If we plan properly and get the right folks in place, our non-profit will be able to remain functional, and ultimately we'd like to see it expand well beyond Ohio. Perhaps by then we'll be ready to start a program in a different state. :-)

hey mattifer by then maybe you can start one in Texas!

Or maybe we can come down and get you started on running a program through the Foundation...?
