"You'll Shoot Your Eye Out!!"

Today’s daily groovy quote comes from the movie “The Christmas Story.” The kid wanted an official Red Ryder Carbine-Action 200 shot range Model air rifle. Santa clause’s response was a sinister laugh and then booted the kid down the Santa slide. Through the whole movie we follow the kid in his torment and never forget the words echoing around him, "You'll shoot your eye out."

Why does this quote leave such an impression so many years after the movie was made? It’s not just the sinister Santa and the elves and the laughing witch that leave this impression. There is a suspense built up in the movie. We don’t know if the kid will get his BB gun for Christmas or not. Santa rejected him laughing, “You’ll shoot your eye out!” Beware from this point on in the post I will give away some parts of the movie. If you really have never seen the classic movie, “The Christmas Story,” then watch it now and come back to this post after you watch the movie.

Anyway we are held in suspense during the whole movie wondering if this kid will get his BB gun or not. Finally Christmas morning comes and he gets up in his pajamas and finds his BB gun. He immediately goes outside to practice shooting the long expected BB gun just to find it had back fired against him. We can relate to this kid in his innocence. We hope for something or expect something to come our way. Then when it finally comes we find this thing back fires against us. This is human nature to be driven by one thing and wait for it and work for it diligently. Finally when we get what we want we find that it just isn’t what we expected or worse it back fires against us. The take home lesson here is to head the advice of others a little more than we think we do. The kid took it overboard. He was haunted and tormented by the advice of others so much that it was crushing him. He was paralyzed almost to the point of being cursed to remain in the confines of the "You'll shoot your eye out" box of thinking. Fear paralyzes from getting out of the box and trying something new. It seems in this movie the kid though about these words, "Don't shoot your eye out!" so much that they became a self fulfilling prophecy. We need to take necessary precautions to be responsible for when we finally get what we want. Since I joined this community I found warning after warning. The first was to keep your keys stored well. The next big warning was etiquette. And the third warning was to create original posts that benefit the community. These warnings are given for our own good. We have freedom to do what we want here but we need to take responsibility so that one day we don't come crying, “I shot my eye out!”
