I went to the market today and i saw a group of women gathered around a lady that was seated with a basket in front of her. They were all touching the content in the basket. The content was UDARA 💃🏽. It is a seasonal fruit and it's known by various names ; UDARA by the igbos, AGBALUMO by the yorubas and THE STAR APPLE in English, and its scientific name is Chrysophyllum africanum or Chrysophyllum albidum. It has a sticky body, sometimes a sour taste and also known to be highly nutritious.
I immediately realized I had not seen udara during its season that was quickly coming to an end. I was happy but also skeptical to buy at the same time, reasons being that I did not want to end up with sour ones, that's such a joy killer 👎🏽
So, i asked the seller if it was sweet and her response was "ah! na sugar sugar" and as I was laughing at her response, the other lady that had picked the lot she wanted beside me boldly told the seller "if I taste the fruit and e no sweet, you go see me for your shop first thing tomorrow morning ", and I laughed even harder, paid for the lot I picked and headed home.
As I got home, I washed them and tasted one. It really was "sugar sugar" like the seller promised and all I felt was regret for not buying more ☹️. Well, at least nobody is going to beat anybody for selling sour udara to her first thing tomorrow morning I also thought 😀.
Who had udara this season??
If you did, how did you tell it was NOT sour??
