With Space Oddity as the backdrop, Todd Haynes' trailer of the new invites us to have the courage to find the place we belong to.
Ben and Rose are children from two different eras, secretly wishing their lives were different. Ben dreams of the father he never knew, while Rose dreams of a mysterious actress whose life he narrates in a scrapbook. When Ben discovers a clue at home and Rose reads a tempting headline in the newspaper, they both begin a search that will unfold with fascinating symmetry.
So begins Wonderstruck, titled El museo de las maravillas (The Museum of Wonderstruck), because, well, it seemed the most logical thing to do, and nothing will ever be as epic as that one. I will always love you from Viaggio in Italia (1954), which more than one laugh has taken away from Rossellini's unconditionals. The film was part of the official selection of the last Cannes Film Festival and is the third collaboration between Haynes and Julianne Moore, with whom he worked in Far From Heaven (2002) and I'm Not There (2007).
In the quest for gold
Haynes, who doesn't usually release films so often, comes from enjoying an almost unanimous acclaim by Carol (2015), which we can summarize for those who haven't seen it as a sweet film that narrates, like no other, the small details of being in love.
Wonderstruck could position itself as a favorite in the award season if its distributor invests enough money in the campaign; because at least the look and background helps: it is based on the eponymous book by Brian Selznick, author of Hugo, and we already know how Scorsese did when he adapted from the latter.
Premieres on October 20 in the United States. The rest of the world will have to wait a little longer. Without further ado, here's the trailer:
