Nowadays, most movies have so drown in special effects that it can get distracting from the plot. Get back to a time when practical effects were quite amazing without looking like people in suits. Enter the Labyrinth.
A teenage girl, tired of always having to care for her (half?) brother unknowingly utters a phrase that has him kidnap by the Goblin King. She goes on a quest to save him before the clock runs off...
As I said, the movie has quite the practical effects (even better than Return of the Jedi I might add). All the different suits came out Jim Hansen's imagination, and they all are well-designed - frmo Ludo to Hoggle (tormented between his faith to the King and his growing friendship with Sarah) and even the junk lady.
David Bowie's performance is worthy of mention. We don't see much of him, but he makes an excellent vilain with his taunts and evil plots to slow down Sarah/make her give up her quest. Speaking of whom, she also gave a great performance - although I thought she was much younger than 16, considering how caught up in her fantasies she is. She does grow up, realizing she knew the final line to her play all long...
Finally, the plot offers some interesting perspectives on life. At one point, Sarah "gets back" to her house and all her stuff. But since it's given to her by the Junk Lady, she realizes that it's just that: junk, a distraction.
In short, Labyrinth is definitely worth a watch, almost 40 years after its release. The work made for those practical effects was worth it, the plot is easy to follow yet interesting and the 2 main actors offer good performances.
