In the age of the Internet, anything quickly becomes a controversy. The Little Mermaid was such a "story", and I don't quite understand why...
The movie is pretty much the same: Ariel, a mermaid, is enamoured with a human she saved (and is fascinated with their technology), but her father highy disapproves. She gets help from the Sea Witch (Ursula) to become a human if she can kiss the prince...
First, the "core" of the "controversy": what if she's black? It's a fantastic creature, they're not supposed to have a defined skin tone. And for Eric's family, it's at least credible; the action seems to be either in Western Africa or Brazil.
As for the movie itself, I liked that they gave a better back story to both characters: Ariel's mother's backstory (and a clearer one for Ursula) and one for Eric too, bringing him closer to Ariel. And Triton actually has realistic measurements
However, I just HATED that bird. Annoying voice, annoying demanors and just filling holes. The animated animals weren't so interesting either. Sebastian wasn't as playful, and Flounder just seemed to be absent.
Nevertheless, Little Mermaid (2023) is still worth a look. The story is more complete and the race switches are credible. It doesn't feel too long and is overall better than the orginal story.
Final rating: 4/5
If I watch it, its more than likely I'm going to watch it for free.
