A Quiet Place

Hi everyone! I'm Thomas and I'm going to talk about the movie "A Quiet Place" by John Kraisinski. (Without Spoilers.)

First of all, we must know what the movie is about:

Sinopsis:

In a post-apocalyptic world, a family is forced to live in silence while hiding from monsters with ultra-sensitive hearing.

Well, starting with a quick comment on the movie, I have to say, I loved it. It's a great film, the vision and message Krasinski has, the world he invented and the drama he created in the film is simply to admire. The film is a horror film, but not the kind that makes you jump screamers, but creates that kind of film where there's so much tension that the fear you have is the one you make you cling to the seat. This film was difficult for me to comment on due to the fact that I just loved it and nothing more, the few details to criticize and the atmosphere it creates is simply great, but, well, I'll try to squeeze little facts out of the film that made me like it a lot.

What I did like it.

Something to admire about this film, first of all, is how it takes the job of making its protagonists great survivors, it doesn't put them as the ones who "have been lucky" but as the ones who demonstrate the highest survival instinct of the human being, and the capacity that returns to the protagonist family. The decisions they make are very good. And taking into account the fact that the film tells its story from a moment when the family is supposed to be getting used to its new way of life, it's a big detail.

Despite the fear they always seem to have, you can see how smart they are to survive. From the first 15 minutes, each member of the family sees how competent they are, and how prepared they are for each moment with the monsters, and as the film progresses, we are only more amazed at how they thought every moment could pass.

The story of the film is one of terror, isn't it? But the story she tells you, even though it could easily blow your nervous, is still very moving, the relationship the family has, and the little story they give the father and daughter, is very nice; but even so, the film still causes you to be standing on your head and staring at it, and it makes it inevitable that you stay tense every damn second; it uses its atmosphere and music to the extreme, by focusing on body language and sign language, and it only managed to give out even more vibes of tension, and that was great.

And a great detail that I have to say is that, in spite of the silence that the world has for these creatures, they use as a means another silence: that of the daughter. The deaf daughter was easily my favorite character, because even though they are getting used to feeling the silence of the world, she has always felt it; and they use this as a means to get close to the girl, and the relationship she creates with her father (Ah, and, I also loved the fact that the actress is deaf, the fact of experimenting with her, to send a message to the people of the world seemed very touching. Like for Kraisinski)

Well, I'm one of those people who obviously likes a tape to carry information to understand what's going on, but when they explain every moment that happens like we're not smart enough to already know what's going on, it's stressful. And A Quiet Place, haha, is totally different, I mean, the movie is totally vague in informing you what's going on, but it gives you enough clues so you don't get lost and understand what's going on. But at times he creates scenes where this vague information is also used as a means of tensioning us (Yeah, it's great how they use so many media to create great horror scenes, without having to put a monster on the screen with 1000% music).

Speaking of the screamers fact. The movie can easily make sense of why they would be in the movie, because of their argument, but, uh, surprisingly it uses them quite little; but it uses them in a more creative way and gives them a little more sense of why they are used, and not as a cheap screamer that only comes out to scare you, and as I've been saying since I started talking about the movie, it uses more of the horror of keeping you tense in your seat. It returns to screamers far more forgivable than those found in a typical horror movie. What's really scary is the situation that each character is in, rather than the fact that there's a very ugly monster out there.

What I didn't like it.

Well, yes, A Quiet Place screamers are forgivable, but, one small problem is, some times do use them as a cheap horror movie. Most of them are totally justified by the film, but, we got to a small part where they come out of nowhere, and they don't give them the sense they used to give them before, and they use them only to scare you and cut you off with the vibe that you've been carrying around the whole film and it looks like "What about this scare?"

And well, something also smaller is the fact that approximately the first 30 minutes of the film get nowhere. Yeah, they tell you stories about the characters, they show you their way of life and present the world they live in, but really, all this won't do any good because the next part of film doesn't need much of that. Sure, they show you the concept pretty cool but, really, where are we going with that story? And you keep asking yourself the question until the story starts to make sense. I don't know how to explain this without spoilers, so I'd better leave it at that. I don't have anything else I didn't like about the movie, I swear I loved it, so let's finish this.

In short, despite the silence, the limitations and everything that comes with the movie, it becomes a great film. I was looking forward to this film with great eagerness when a youtuber that I follow recommended it to me, filled me with expectation and emotion for the film and I was not disappointed at all by it, fulfilled what I wanted, where all decisions use it as a means to make it even more than the scoop makes it, and exceeds all I expected in scares, excitement and drama. And before I finish, I want to say that I obviously recommend this film, but also that you see it in silence, either in the cinema, or in a room with the house alone or all sleeping, and pay close attention to the film, it will improve your experience a lot, believe me.
