After leaving Egypt and promulgating the decalogue in Deuteronomy 5:1-22, Moses in his devotion to God, synthesizes the law in a simple precept: "Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.", Deuteronomy 6:5. This instruction will be the fundament, in the new testament of the teachings of Jesus on love and the doctrine of the kingdom of God.
Moses continues with his exhortation within his second speech and teaches: "Circumcise your hearts, therefore, and do not be stiff-necked any longer", Deuteronomy 10:16.
Although the Law teaches us what sin is, the law by itself is not enough, it takes a well-predisposed heart to give life to the Law: "And now, Israel, what does the LORD your God ask of you but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in obedience to him, to love him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, and to observe the LORD's commands and decrees that I am giving you today for your own good?", Deuteronomy 10:12-13.
Serving God with fear Moses tells us, the fear of God is constancy, firmness, devotion, equanimity, stability. This is the true meaning of circumcising hearts, go beyond the letter, and go towards the spirit that vivifies it.
God is the wisest, perfect, and defends the cause of the helpless adds Moses: "For the LORD your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome, who shows no partiality and accepts no bribes. He defends the cause of the fatherless and the widow, and loves the foreigner residing among you, giving them food and clothing", Deuteronomy 10:17-18.
The Bible also tells us not to behave like fools, that is, we have the freedom to choose another path that is not the law, but that path is a path to nowhere, towards an empty life without God. In the old testament there is an identification of the Law with the wisdom of God, for the people of Israel to live with wisdom is to follow the divine precepts.
