Meganebashi, Nagasaki - Japan

IMG_8628.JPG

Today's photo... It's an unusual bridge, which is located in Nagasaki, Japan. It's unique with its shape and it's reflection in the little river. Together they make... Spectacles! That's the name of the bridge itself. Spectacles bridge.

It was built in 1634 by the Chinese Zen priest Mozi of Kofukuji Temple. This is actually the oldest arch bridge in Japan along with Edo's Nihonbashi bridge and Iwakuni's Kintaikyou bridge. It has been designated as an Important Cultural Property. It's a stone double-arch bridge. In 1982, a disastrous deluge destroyed six of the ten stone bridges over the Nakashima River in Nagasaki, but the spectacle bridge was almost intact. Some of its stonesa were washet away, but eventually all of them were retrieved and the bridge was restored to its initial appearance.

The bridge was once destroyed by flood in 1647, but was rebuilt in its original form the following year. It's great to see how Japanese keep on rebuilding their historical monuments, temples and literally everything, which is damaged by natural disasters. I think all other nations must follow this pattern and keep our history alive.

This is a beautiful photo.

Hello @mdosev!
I have to agree with you, to rebuilt the existing historical landmarks is cost efficient and it will also retain the sentimental value of it. Here in Singapore, the old houses are rebuilt and maintained for commercial use.

I like the view that you shown here and the way you describe its form, "spectacles". It's an interesting blog and I'm pleased to feature it to the 11th edition of Photocircle's Daily. Congrats!
