Global Warming & Climate Change: It’s Time To Get Real!

We all know one thing for certain. Whether or not the Democrats choose to emphasize climate change and global warming as significant issues, the table has been set, and it will be served.

This fact led me to call one of my favorite political operatives, a man who I know at times has been a speech writer and idea contributor to both major political parties, and some not so major. He is an equal opportunity political savant, in my estimation, Maxwell Jaxson.

What follows is a summary of the call:

Me: Max. Haven’t talked to you for ages. Are you working for anybody yet in the current presidential field?

Max: Nah. Had some feelers, but no bites.

Me: But you’re open.

Max: Door’s always open at Maxwell’s. Gotta make a living.

(For a man so effusive in his written language, I always find it so interesting that he is so clipped verbally.)

Me: Any thoughts on the matter? Have you given any thought to who you’d really like to work for, or any ideas you would like to see advanced this go around?

Max: Yeah. For Sure. They’re all talking about the Green New Deal. But I haven’t seen anybody tackle it the way I’d like to seem them do it.

Me: Yes. It seems like everybody is talking about it, from one perspective or another. You got the Dems all wrestling with how much of an issue they want to make it, and how to go about it. The Republicans seem to have no problem with that. They want to ridicule it. It seems to me they don’t want to take it on at all except for a chance to exaggerate the cost to doing anything about it, or just plain use it to make fun of the Democrats.

Max: Yeah. But I haven’t heard one person talk about it the right way, the way it should be done.

Me: But I bet you have some ideas on that.

Max: Yep.

Me: We’ll, can you tell me?

Max: Sure.

(Silence, as I wait for Max to start. He doesn’t. Like I say, pulling teeth.)

Me: Max, I’m working against a deadline here myself. Why don’t you go ahead and tell me what you have in mind that a presidential candidate might say, or should say, about climate change.

(More silence. I start finger drumming right into the phone, as loudly as I can, hoping he gets the point. Finally . . . )

Max: What was that? Bad connection?

Me: Something like that. What have you got for me?

Max: I was just getting it. I wrote it down this morning, after doing some thinking about it, about climate change, global warming, the whole schmear. Did you hear the last time we had this much CO2 in the atmosphere the seas rose more than 60ft. than they are now! We’re all about to get our britches wet.

Me: No. I hadn’t seen that.

Max: You need to do more reading and less writing. Leave something for us unemployed schlubs.

Me: Yes. I promise I will do that. Now what have you got for me.

Max: OK. Here goes. I’ll read it.

Me: By all means. Go ahead. You know I’m recording this, by the way.

Max: I always assume you nosey types are. Go ahead, record. I was thinking about what we need is a Moon Shot on this, a real Kennedy type speech when I wrote this. Here goes:

((I could tell by his tenor and how he jumped into it, this was something important to him. I recorded the following, and here it is, word for word. I put it in quotes because, after listening again to it, I decided this deserved to be put in quotes:)

“I believe our nation should now commit itself to leading the world’s effort to put an end to human contribution to global warming. I believe we should not back away from this challenge. We should not back away just because others don’t see it. We should not back away because others deny it. And most importantly, we should not back away because others choose to belittle and mock our efforts to pick up the challenge, and to defeat it.”

Me: Very good, Max.

Max: Wait. there’s more -

“We can not leave our future to the naysayers and mockers and deniers. They would continue to lead us down a certain path to destruction. We bend only to pick up the flag of bravery, to carry it forever and proudly forward, unafraid of the fiercest winds against us.

Moreover, we choose at this moment, to be called to this fight, and become fully engaged in it. It is the defining existential battle of our time, and for all ages to come. We can not let it become our last.”

(I had to stop. Wow, I thought, this is really something.)

Me: That’s good Max. That’s really good.

Max: It’s a work in progress, but I bet I could sell someone on it. Go ahead and print it, just don’t forget my name when you do it.

Me: I will do that Max. I will get right on it.

We said our goodbyes, and I went to file this report. And allow me do a little promotional work here. I agree with Max, I think something like that should be said. So if you want someone to work with you on something like this, Mr. Maxwell Jaxson is your man. Just remember, you heard it here first.
