This plant is native to equatorial Asia, including locations in South Asia and Southeast Asia but has also been introduced to Africa, Australia and the Americas.
In Sri Lanka and India, it is revered as a holy flower, used in daily puja rituals.
The genus name of Clitoria is a direct translation from the local name of these plant in the Ternate language; which called as Telang, literally means "clitoris" due to its shape that resembles the shape of human female genitals.
