Kinda-newbie question: wouldn't sharing the code there (via open source release) enable someone out there to essentially copy the code and make their own privacy coin (and diluting one of Cloak's unique advantages?)

Indeed it could. However there is the first to market principle. I wouldn't worry about competetion in the general sense. There are trillions of dollars worth of wealth that will be seeking valid forms of re-monetization. Be glad you're in at the early stage. Be glad we have a developer who's interested enough to assist with open sourcing the code and who's taken a justifiable position about the Enigma code.
I think it's really important to seek the motivations of the developer and work to be in allignment with things that support his desires so that the project may blossom.
