Standardized sizing for suits doesn't exist!

Some websites say for men's suits expressed as size for the jacket (so, not the special sizing used for dress shirts), IT and FR sizing are the same and are 10 more than US.

So an Italian men's suit might be a IT 50, which is a US 40.

French sizes are often listed as being the same as Italian (which is sometimes labeled "European", or maybe it's the French that are labeled "European"?), so FR 50 = IT 50.

But on a subset of cases, FR 50 = IT 54 = US 44.

I can't figure out what's going on. Is the FR 50 vs FR 54 actually a difference based on whether it's a suit/jacket or a "top"?

Is it that the French are moving towards consistency with the rest of Europe but the legacy French sizing persists and is -4 from Europe?

I have no idea why so many retailers, even retailers who are their own clothing brand (!), don't post actual measurements the way Mr Porter and SSENSE do. Especially when returns are so expensive for them to deal with. But most especially when they are trying to sell stuff "final sale" in the US (I think maybe they can't do that in the EU). But in any case, at the very least they should be clear about what the heck the sizing actually is intended to mean.

Believe me, it's not just suits. I have to purchase in the (obese) kids' department for pants because size "30" is too large
