The Memory Box #2 : Spooky the Cat

in club100 •  3 years ago

I have never really been a cat person. It has always been dogs for me.

In fact I had never owned a cat until one day in the winter of 2005.

I was feeding the turkeys in the back barn when suddenly out of nowhere a white cat appeared.

This was Spooky.

The Memory Box #2 : Spooky the Cat

Spooky was a feral cat, wandering the Welsh hills looking for its next meal and somewhere warm to sleep for the night.

It had sneaked into the barn through the flap where we let the turkeys out.

The cat was very timid at first, backing away when I approached.

I wasn't adverse to having a cat around the place as they help keep the rats and mice away.

So I decided to try to make it feel at home with some scraps of meat and a little milk.

It wasn't bothering the turkeys so I left the food and went back to the house.

Next morning when I told the children about the cat, they were all keen to see it.

As soon as they were up and dressed they rushed to the barn to look for the cat. Alas it was nowhere to be seen.

I knew it was a feral cat so I was not surprised it had gone.

However that evening when I went to check on the turkeys there was the cat again quietly sitting on a ledge waiting for supper.

Can you spot Spooky?

This went on for several days until the cat took permanent residence in the barn.

The children loved it, although it very much remained a feral, farm cat.

Very much a 'here's the latest rat I've caught' rather than a 'sit on the lap, petting' sort of cat.

Because of its all white coat, its ghostly appearance and its original late night arrival, Spooky was the obvious name for the cat.

Spooky's presence made the children keen to get another cat.

So a few months later we took ownership of a second more child friendly, stroking, petting and purring cat called Mitzi. Mitzi came from a local cat sanctuary.

Spooky and Mitzi in the snow

Although the two cats seemed to get along okay, one day as suddenly as he had appeared, Spooky disappeared.

Maybe it was jealously of the attention Mitzi got from the children, or maybe it was just the call of the wild.

We did have another cat join our household a little later.

Then we had kittens.

Cats ruled the homestead for a couple of years.

Until Mani the dog arrived...

That's my second dip into the Memory Box.

Stay tuned for the next one.

Spooky looks so beautiful in perfect harmony with the snow 👌 Spooky mysteriously joins your family and leaves, again mysteriously, causing two cats to join your family 🤗 I hope Spooky left because she/he was free-spirited, not because she/he was jealous of Mitzi. The memory box series is a good idea. I wish there were photos of every beautiful memory like this.

I'm not a cat person, but I love the fact that they are very neat. As for spooky is pure white 🤍 and lovely. Thanks for sharing your memory with us

Cats are interesting creatures. Even if you're not a cat person, they can turn you into a cat person after just spending some time with them. Spooky was a cool cat, I hope he had a happy life

Hi @pennsif Kind regards, it was very nice to read your memory of the beautiful Spooky, personally I love cats. This wild cat that was living in his barn apart from being very beautiful and help with control of the rats also allowed them to meet the cats. 😻Greetings.

I see Spooky, but if you hadn't asked, maybe I wouldn't have seen Spooky? Spooky is so beautifully white 😍. Great story, too bad you can't communicate with animals exactly so you don't know what's going on inside them and why she just disappeared, just like the fox.
So it seems mysterious when you don't know.
If people were all like you did with the fox, then there would be peace. Not attacking the supposed enemy, looking at it, noticing its beauty and even becoming friends.

Very interesting story. It's a shame the Spooky cat went missing. Very nice and beautiful cat. We also love keeping cats at home. Thank you for sharing an interesting story with us.

Sir, this is Interesting memory. And much Interesting to know you like cats. Well, i like dogs alot, cats here are a little bit while, whereas dogs are much friendly and protective.

Thank you for sharing your memory.

I love your memory box shares. I'm following for more 👍

Cat is a beautiful animal. When the time comes, it also takes the form of a lion. And protects its owner...

Spooky is a super cute cat, his all white color gives him a great look, too bad he left after spending some time with you, the good thing was that the kids enjoyed a good time with Spooky who maybe felt a little jealous or as you say nature called him.

I too am more of a dog person than a cat person, but I have never been closed to having one in the future. Good memory of Spooky and I hope he is well.
