Hong Kong Snapshot (24) (With Video) – Sai Wan, not introduced in travel guide, fusion of New and old, Chinese and British(2)

in cn •  7 years ago

As a former British colony, HK is famous of the mixing of the Chinese and Western. Unfortunately, with the development of the city, we lost a lot of styles of HK. All places become the same.

But because of history, Sai Wan still keep the style of old HK. Also, more and more modern shops and restaurants move in, letting Sai Wan become a real fusion of the New and the Old, the Eastern and Western. But this style is just like flower, will soon wither by the new buildings. So please come to Sai Wan and taste it.

Today, I will go to the west side of Sai Wan and bring you to three places!

Forbes Street Masonry Wall Trees

Taking train to the Kennedy Town Station, we may see a lot of banyan trees climbing a big wall to the sky. It is the Forbes Street Masonry Wall Trees, the biggest Masonry Wall Trees in Hong Kong, and it is 100 meter long! There are 26 banyan trees and some are even over 100 years old. 4 of them had been listed in the “HK Old & Valuable Trees “.

Actually the trees can block the sun for people. Their roots can grab the wall and absorb the water inside, making the wall more stable. Initial MTR planned to build the train station at the street but got banned by the society just because of the Masonry Wall Trees. You may see how attractive the Masonry Wall Trees is.

Mount Davis Fortification

Leaving Forbes Street and walk up the hill. We arrive the hill top of Mount Davis(269m). There is a ruin, a fortification. The fortification was built in 1900 to strengthen the defense of the HK Island. During the World War II, the fortification was destroyed by the Japanese army and only a ruin was left.

DSC01744.JPG

Now the fortification is already a grade II historical building in HK. But as it is up on the hill and also there are lot of ghost stories, only adventurers and war game lovers will go to the fortification. Today I am alone arriving this place and meet no people. Standing on the platform of the fortification, I imagine how the British soldiers fought the Japanese. But now, everything has gone.

It was heard that the military camp is just like a maze. But unluckily I can only find an entrance 3 meters below the ground. OK forget it! Then I see another camp. It’s time for adventure! But when I walk to the camp, I can see a lot of broken bottles and cigarette butts on the grass. Looking inside the camp, the darkness, I am afraid if there is criminal inside. I am alone only. So I give up again haha! Next time I will get some friends with me.

Leaving the fortification there is an old water tower. I climbed to the tower top and try to open the tower door. But I only see darkness without water. This trip is not fun enough. I will get some friends come with me together again.

Sky Mirror of HK

Arriving the HKU train station, I walk to the Instagram Pier. It is the Sky Mirror of HK.

DSC01866.JPG

The Instagram Pier is not a public area, but many photographers and couples always go inside so the government just let it be. Going along the pier, we may see wooden cases, and metal houses. All these are the topic of photographers. At the end of the pier, there is a concave. After raining, the water in the concave will make a “mirror’. But it is sunny today and no water in the concave. So I find a photo in the web for you.

There are a lot of couples in the pier. Poor single me! And it is cloudy. So I can’t take a good photo of sunset. But there are a lot of surprising shooting area. Photographers must love it.

A Video of the journey

After introducing 7 places in Sai Wan, I believe you must be interested in the district. In the journey, I also find a lot of good buildings and good stories. I will tell you later! But, the district is changing, changing by new buildings. In the future, Sai Wan will just become a normal district, just like the others. Community Improvement should be a good thing. Why do I feel sad about it?
